Minimal disruption during installation. Ideal for listed buildings, heritage sites, and properties where cabling is impractical.
Every fire alarm system in the UK is specified by a category (what it protects) and, for domestic systems, a grade (how it is powered and monitored). Your fire risk assessment or licensing officer will name one of these — here is what they mean.
L1 covers the entire building and is the highest standard, typical for care homes and hotels. L2 adds high-risk rooms to escape routes. L3 protects escape routes and adjoining rooms — the most common specification for offices. L4 covers escape routes only, and L5 is a custom category targeted at a specific risk identified in the fire risk assessment.
P1 protects the whole building, P2 defined high-risk areas only. Insurers commonly require a P category alongside an L category for commercial premises. Fitting a system in a business? See commercial fire alarm installation.
Grade A is a full panel system with control equipment — required in larger HMOs. Grade D (mains-powered interlinked alarms with battery back-up) is the standard for most rented homes and smaller HMOs: D1 with sealed long-life batteries, D2 with replaceable ones. Grade F covers battery-only alarms, which most landlord licensing schemes no longer accept.
LD1 covers every room and circulation space, LD2 the escape routes plus high-risk rooms such as kitchens and living rooms, LD3 the escape routes only. London HMO licensing typically requires Grade D, Category LD2 as a minimum.
Not sure which your property needs? The free survey answers that in one visit, and the quote names the exact category and grade so building control, your insurer and your licensing officer all see the same specification.
All our installations comply with BS 5839 standards for fire detection and alarm systems. We provide full documentation and certification for insurance purposes.
Grade D interlinked smoke and heat alarms for a typical home cost £200–£500 installed. An HMO fire alarm system (Grade D, Category LD2) is from £600 installed and certificated, depending on storeys and rooms, and commercial panel systems start from around £1,200 depending on the number of zones. Every job starts with a free, no-obligation survey so you get an exact fixed quote before any work begins.
Most London HMOs need a Grade D, Category LD2 system under BS 5839 Part 6 — mains-powered, interlinked smoke alarms in escape routes and living rooms plus heat alarms in kitchens. We install to this standard and issue the certification your licensing officer and insurer will ask for.
Commercial fire alarm systems should be serviced at least every 6 months under BS 5839 Part 1. Domestic and HMO systems should be professionally checked annually, with a weekly user test. We offer servicing contracts with reminders, so compliance never lapses.
A typical home or flat takes one day. HMOs usually take 1–2 days depending on the number of storeys and rooms. Commercial installations depend on the zone count — we confirm the schedule at survey and work around your tenants or trading hours.
