How Long Does Fire Alarm Installation Take?

One of the most common questions we get asked before a fire alarm installation is: how long will it take? The honest answer depends on the property — but we'll walk you through what to expect.

It Depends on the Size and Type of Property

A straightforward domestic installation — fitting interlinked smoke and heat detectors throughout a two or three-bedroom house — typically takes two to four hours. Most homeowners are surprised by how quick and tidy the process is.

For larger properties or commercial premises, installation times vary considerably depending on the size of the building, the type of system (conventional panel vs addressable), the number of detectors, and how much cable routing is needed.

Typical Installation Times by Property Type

    • Small house or flat (Grade D interlinked alarms): 2–4 hours
    • HMO (3–6 bedrooms, Grade D system): 3–6 hours, usually completed in one day
    • Small commercial premises (conventional panel, up to 10 zones): 1–2 days
    • Medium commercial building (addressable panel, 10–50 devices): 2–4 days
    • Large multi-storey commercial installation: quoted individually, typically 1–2 weeks

    What Takes the Most Time?

The bulk of installation time is usually cabling — running wires from the control panel to each detector, sounder, and manual call point. In older properties with solid walls or multi-storey layouts, this can take significantly longer.

Wireless systems eliminate most of this. Because the detectors communicate via radio frequency rather than cable, installation time for a wireless system in a home or HMO can be reduced by half compared to a wired system. There's also far less disturbance to décor — no chasing of walls or lifting of floorboards.

Will I Need to Vacate the Property?

For most domestic installations, you don't need to leave. Our engineers work methodically room by room, keeping disruption to a minimum. For commercial properties, we always plan work to minimise impact on your business — often scheduling cabling runs out of hours.

What Happens at the End of the Installation?

Once all devices are fitted, our engineer will test every detector and sounder to confirm the system is working correctly. For panel systems, this includes testing each zone and confirming communication between all devices and the panel.

You'll receive a completion certificate confirming the installation meets BS 5839, and a walkthrough so you understand how to use and test your system. The whole handover typically takes 20–30 minutes.
