What Is SSAIB and Why Does It Matter for Your Security System?

When you see 'SSAIB approved' on a security company's website, it means something real — not just a logo. Here's what SSAIB actually is and why it should matter to you.

    What Is SSAIB?

SSAIB stands for Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board. It is an independent, UKAS-accredited (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) certification body that inspects and approves security and fire alarm companies across the UK.

To become SSAIB approved, a company must meet rigorous standards covering technical competence, system design and installation quality, customer service, complaints handling, and ongoing compliance. SSAIB inspectors carry out unannounced site visits to approved companies to verify these standards are maintained.

    Why Does SSAIB Approval Matter?

SSAIB approval is not just a badge — it has real, practical consequences for you as a customer:

    • Police response — For your intruder alarm to be eligible for police response in the UK, it must be installed by an SSAIB or NSI approved company and connected to a UKAS-accredited Alarm Receiving Centre. Without this, the police will not attend your alarm.
    • Insurance — Most home and business insurers require that alarm systems are installed by an approved company. An unapproved system may not be recognised for insurance discount purposes, and a claim following a burglary could be refused if your system wasn't properly installed.
    • Quality assurance — SSAIB inspects its members' actual installations, not just their paperwork. When you choose an SSAIB-approved company, you can be confident the work meets recognised British Standards.
    • Complaints process — If something goes wrong, SSAIB provides an independent dispute resolution process — something you don't have with an unapproved installer.

SSAIB vs NSI — What's the Difference?

NSI (National Security Inspectorate) is another UKAS-accredited certification body with very similar standards to SSAIB. Both are recognised equally by the police, insurers, and the British Standards Institution. Choosing a company approved by either body gives you the same level of assurance.

Some companies hold both approvals. Security Red Alert is SSAIB approved for intruder alarm systems.

How to Check If a Company Is SSAIB Approved

You can verify any company's SSAIB approval status at ssaib.org — use the 'Find an Approved Company' search tool. Always verify before signing a contract, and be wary of companies that claim approval but can't provide a certificate number.
