Most alarm systems have a lifespan of around 8–10 years. After that, reliability drops sharply. Here are the warning signs that it's time for an upgrade.
1. Frequent False Alarms
Occasional false alarms happen, but if your system is triggering regularly without cause, the sensors are likely degrading. Older PIR detectors lose sensitivity over time and become erratic. Besides being disruptive, excessive false alarms can cause the police to withdraw their response to your property.
2. The Control Panel Is Over 10 Years Old
Alarm panels aren't built to last forever. After a decade, components degrade, software becomes obsolete, and spare parts become harder to source. An old panel also won't support modern communication paths (4G, IP) needed for monitoring.
3. You Can't Get It Serviced
If your alarm engineer can no longer source parts for your system, it's a clear sign it's reached end-of-life. Running a system that can't be properly maintained is a false economy — and potentially a compliance issue for commercial premises.
4. It Uses the Old Telephone Network
The UK analogue PSTN telephone network was switched off in many areas and is being phased out nationally. Any monitored alarm that relied on a traditional phone line for its ARC connection now needs upgrading to a 4G or IP communicator — or the monitoring is simply not working.
5. No Remote App Access
Modern alarm systems let you arm, disarm, and check the status of your system from your phone. If your current system requires you to be physically present to set or unset it — and doesn't send you any alerts — you're missing out on features that are now standard.
6. It Fails Its Annual Service
If your engineer flags multiple faults at a service visit — degraded sensors, battery failures, communication errors — and the repair cost approaches the cost of a new system, replacement is the more sensible option.
7. You've Had a Break-In or Near-Miss
A break-in is a prompt to review your entire security setup — not just repair what was damaged. Technology moves quickly; a 10-year-old system may have significant coverage gaps that a modern installation would address.
